For Immediate Release Contact: Monica Miller, Director of Programs ARTIST TRUST INVESTS IN 80 WASHINGTON STATE ARTISTS Artist Trust is proud to announce its support of 80 Washington artists through the 2008 Grants for Artist Projects (GAP) Program. The GAP Program provides up to $1,500 to individual artists for projects in all artistic disciplines. This year’s award amount is the highest to date, totaling $119,195. Artist Trust is thrilled to be able to support such high-caliber artists. As usual, the selection process was both competitive and inspiring. Applications received increased 23% from 2007 (975 from 795). In reading the project descriptions [highlighted on our website], I am moved by the ambition, ingenuity and dedication of artists across the state. ~ Monica Miller, Director of Programs The GAP Program provides support for artist-generated projects, which can include (but are not limited to) the development, completion or presentation of new work. GAPs are open to artists of all disciplines and offer a maximum of $1,500 for projects. An interdisciplinary panel of artists and arts professionals selected from around Washington State and Oregon chose GAP recipients. Projects range from time off to finish a novel, studio repairs, travel across the state, safety equipment, and website development — but the sum result is Artist Trust’s largest-to-date investment to support and encourage individual artists’ projects working in all disciplines in order to enrich community life throughout Washington State. It is very exhilarating to receive an email that congratulates one… The acknowledgement is a symbol of significant recognition for the art I've been trying to practice. ~ Mike Daley, Literary Arts, Skagit County This year’s recipients were selected by review panels made up of artists, past Artist Trust grant recipients, and arts professionals from Eastern, Central and Western Washington, as well as Oregon. A complete list of 2008 recipients and selection panelists is below. The foremost criterion for selection is the artistic excellence of an applicant’s artwork. Panelists are also asked to respond to an applicant’s project proposal and the feasibility of their project. Selection panels rotate annually. GAP recipients and their projects are posted on Artist Trust’s website at www.artisttrust.org/grants/recipient_profiles/GAP/08 and will be featured in the Fall 2008 edition of Art Source, Artist Trust’s print newsletter. Artist Trust also announces the six recipients of artist residencies in Port Townsend and Camano Island. For the second year, Artist Trust is partnering with Centrum — a gathering place for artists and creative thinkers from around the world, located at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend — to provide a month-long residency for five artists. Each artist will have private accommodations and access to studio resources plus a stipend for travel, living expenses and supplies. In addition, by special arrangement through the generosity of the Hafer Family Foundation, one GAP recipient was selected for a residency on the Hafer family property on Camano Island. The recipient will have full access to this retreat-like property, plus a stipend for travel, living expenses and supplies. This year’s residency recipients can be viewed at www.artisttrust.org/grants/residencies. Not only will I be able to work on my project at Centrum, I am planning to collaborate with my artists friends who live in the Centrum/Port Townsend area to work on more creative music. I will be able to introduce my Japanese folk music on many kinds of instruments from all over the world, which will lead me to research and practice. ~ Miho Takekawa, Performing Arts, King County  For print-ready images, please contact Monica Miller, Director of Programs, at monica@artisttrust.org, 206/467-8734 x10, or 1/866/21-TRUST (toll free).
