For Immediate Release Contact: Monica Miller, Director of Programs ARTIST TRUST INVESTS IN 61 WASHINGTON STATE ARTISTS Artist Trust is proud to announce its support of 61 Washington artists through the 2009 Grants for Artist Projects (GAP) Program. The GAP Program provides up to $1,500 to individual artists for projects in all artistic disciplines; a total of $89,803 will be awarded. It is always exciting to have Eastern Washington artists represented in the mix with artists from around the state to receive funding from Artist Trust. Over my years here at the Spokane Arts Commission, grant recipients have not only benefited from the funding but through the connections made as a result of the grant process. [Karen Mobley, Arts Director, Spokane Arts Commission] The GAP Program provides support for artist-generated projects, which can include (but are not limited to) the development, completion or presentation of new work. GAPs are open to artists of all disciplines and offer a maximum of $1,500 for projects. Projects ranged from time off to finish a novel, studio repairs, travel across the state, safety equipment, and website development — but the sum result is a repeated and consistent investment to support and encourage individual artists’ projects working in all disciplines in order to enrich community life throughout Washington State. It is a very important recognition that my work is honored and respected by other filmmakers and artists. The GAP grant is making it possible for me to spend the time to lengthen the film and provide funds to submit it to film festivals. It is a much needed source of revenue. [Lucy Ostrander, Kitsap County] This year’s recipients were selected by review panels made up of artists, past Artist Trust grant recipients, and arts professionals from Eastern, Central and Western Washington. A complete list of 2009 recipients and selection panelists is below. The foremost criterion for selection is the artistic excellence of an applicant’s artwork. Panelists are also asked to respond to an applicant’s project proposal and the feasibility of their project. Selection panels rotate annually. GAP recipients and their projects are posted on Artist Trust’s website at www.artisttrust.org/grants/recipient_profiles/GAP/09 and will be featured in the Summer 2009 edition of Art Source, Artist Trust’s print newsletter. Artist Trust also announces the three recipients of artist residencies in Port Townsend and Camano Island. For the third year, Artist Trust is partnering with Centrum’s New Work Residency Program – a gathering place for artists and creative thinkers from around the world, located at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend – to provide a month-long residency for two artists. Each artist will have private accommodations and access to studio resources plus a stipend for travel, living expenses and supplies. In addition, by special arrangement through the generosity of the Hafer Family Foundation, one GAP recipient was selected for a residency on the Hafer family property on Camano Island. The recipient will have full access to this retreat-like property, plus a stipend for travel, living expenses and supplies. This year’s residency recipients can be viewed at www.artisttrust.org/grants/residencies. Both the award and the recognition for the award is important to my writing career because [it] not only grants me the financial freedom to purchase a new tool necessary for my craft, but the prestige of the award as well as the publicity will assist in booking future engagements for readings.
