Artist Trust and the Washington State, King County, and Seattle Arts Commissions, in cooperation with numerous local arts organizations and agencies administered the Artists' Quake Aid, a relief fund for artists living and working in Western Washington counties affected by the February 28, 2001 earthquake. Through funding provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the King County Arts Commission, approximately $40,000 was available to assist artists in recovering losses of inventory, equipment and supplies, workspace, and lost work time. In addition to providing direct financial assistance, the Artists' Quake Aid project connected artists and arts organizations to other local and federal resources. The information collected from this project is used to educate artists about preventative measures and to continue to study the broader issue of artists' work spaces throughout the area. Artist Trust is proud to release a report that raises public awareness about how artists are impacted by earthquakes and what safety and planning steps can be taken to minimize possible future damage. This report was published in September 2001. Table of Contents Artists suffered severe damages to their artwork, work spaces, equipment and materials as a result of the February 28th, 2001 Nisqually Earthquake. Artist Trust in conjunction with the Seattle Arts Commission, has prepared a 40 page report presenting the findings of the Artists' Quake Aid Relief Fund and the conjoining artist surveys conducted after the earthquake. The purpose of the report was to survey the losses of artists and use the collected information as a tool for advocacy. Included in the report are resources for artists about work space, insurance, emergency assistance and earthquake preparedness. The report contains a new, hot off the press, Step by Step Guide on earthquake preparedness for artists detailing how to safely prepare studio space and store artwork, materials and supplies. Limited copies of the report are available. Please contact Artist Trust for more information or to request a copy at info@artisttrust.org. Funding for the Artists' Quake Aid Report was generously provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the King County Arts Commission. |
