"Women to the rescue" Artist Trust scored a $100,000 grant from the Washington Women's Foundation... :: "Artist Trust wants higher profile on East Side" In last week's column, I pointed out that the 2007 Artist Trust GAP awards bore a distinctly west-of-the-Cascades look. Of the 77 artists (out of 795 applicants) who won awards of up to $1,500, only six were from Eastern Washington. And of those, only one qualified for a literary grant: Pasco's Gwendolyn James. In answer, Shalon Parker, an assistant professor of art at Gonzaga University who doubles as an Artist Trust board member, wrote an e-mail that made some interesting points... :: "Artist gets her dream residency" Through an Artist Trust partnership with the Hafer Family Foundation, South Sound filmmaker and digital media artist Anne de Marcken was selected for an inaugural residency on Camano Island... :: "Book notes: Only one writer from East Side wins GAP award" In the press information accompanying the announcement of the 2007 Grants for Arts Project awards, the sponsoring entity – Artist Trust – does bit of bragging about its support of Washington state arts. And much of it is justified... :: "2007 Artist Trust grant recipients from Inland Northwest" Five artists from the Inland Northwest are recipients of 2007 Artist Trust Grants for Artist Projects (GAP). The GAP Program provides up to $1,500 to individual artists for projects in all artistic disciplines... :: "Seattle artist's vision -- Mighty Tieton -- is taking shape" ... Working in the print shop is Carla Schultz, who spent her childhood in Tieton. Bent over a refurbished 1940s press, she's fine-tuning a poster for Saturday's "Tieton -- Art Takes Flight" event. It's a collaboration between Mighty Tieton, the Drachen Foundation and Artist Trust, the Seattle-based, not-for-profit organization that provides direct funding to Washington artists and serves as a professional information resource... :: "Night Moves: Artist Trust's 20th Anniversary Benefit Art Auction" For the first time in its two-decade history, the annual Artist Trust art auction was held in the evening. On February 3 at Seattle Center's Fisher Pavilion, guests like Noah Weaver got up close and personal with paintings such as Julia Rickett's Equilibrium... :: "Seattle Artists Getting A 20 Percent Raise" This week’s paper is online now, and I want to add to my In Art News account of the 20th anniversary Artist Trust auction, because I just got a press release that says Artist Trust grossed more than $260,000 at the sparkly affair on Saturday night... :: "In Art News: Blessings Abound" :: "Steve Davis' images earn him one of 21 Artist Trust fellowships" Steve Davis photographs teenagers in various juvenile detention facilities around the state, halfway houses and all-the-way locked down wards for kids. He also photographs marginal people who have burrowed into their work, and people with afflictions who manage to find solace in each other's company... :: "Getting an EDGE on the Business of Art" Three Port Townsend artists, Gloria Lamson, Norma Fried and Steven Kennel, participated in the Artist Trust EDGE program at Fort Worden State Park the week of Aug. 20-27. The EDGE professional development training program is a 50-hour intensive workshop that teaches "the business side" of an artist's practice, said Heather Joy Helbach-Olds, Artist Trust director of programs... :: "They Work Hard for Their Money" Artist Trust awarded grants totaling $70,033 to 52 local artists and writers this year through its Grants for Artist Projects Program. The astonishing thing is not the size of the grants (which topped out at $1,400) nor the number of them (though we applaud Artist Trust for distributing funds directly to such a wide range of individuals)... :: "Trust in state's top artists" While no one exhibition can fully reflect the variety of contemporary art being made in Washington state today, the "Artist Trust Grant Recipients" show, under way in the Chase Gallery at Spokane City Hall, is an outstanding effort... :: "Braden Receives Fellowship (Again!)" Allen Braden, Tacoma Community College English and humanities instructor, recently received a $6,000 Artist Trust/Washington State Arts Commission Fellowship in Literary Arts... :: "Genius Idea" (Letter to the Editor) TO THE EDITOR: On behalf of the board and staff of Artist Trust, congratulations to The Stranger for taking the bold step to implement the Stranger Genius Awards. And a warm thanks to Emily Hall for pointing to Artist Trust as a model for artist support in the region and across the country... :: |
