What is a Meet the Artist Event?
Artist Trust's Meet the Artist (MTA) program is an integral component of the annual Artist Trust/Washington State Arts Commission Fellowship. Meet the Artist events bridge our artistic community with the diverse communities in Washington State, increasing awareness about the vital roles art and artists play in our culture. As you share your creative process with a community that may be unfamiliar with the kind of work you do as an artist, it gives your work a broader audience and increases awareness about the vital role artists play in our culture. Every recipient of the Fellowship is required to create and present an event.

REPORT DEADLINE: DECEMBER 15, 2010
Eight Steps to Fulfilling Meet the Artist Requirements for Fellowship Recipients:
- Present a Meet the Artist event outside of their geographic area of residence OR to a community that would not ordinarily have access to their work by event deadline.
- Get approval from Artist Trust staff for your Meet the Artist event. Contact Monica Miller, Director of Programs (monica@artisttrust.org; 206/467-8734 x10; 1/866-21-TRUST) in advance to discuss ideas for your event to make sure it fits within the program requirements. Confirm the date and time your event with Artist Trust at least four weeks in advance.
- If your event is open to the public, please post the event on the Artist Trust website at www.artisttrust.org/pro_resources/listing (if you haven’t yet posted a listing on our website, this is a great opportunity to learn how… it’s easy and reaches a lot of people).
- Also, if it’s a public event, email lila@artisttrust.org the event details and she’ll post it in our biweekly enewsletter, (re)Source.
- Acknowledge Artist Trust with the logo and the following statement on all publicity sent out and/or displayed at your event: “Artist Trust's Meet the Artist program is an integral component of the annual Artist Trust/Washington State Arts Commission Fellowship. Meet the Artist events bridge our artistic community with the diverse communities in Washington State, increasing awareness about the vital roles art and artists play in our culture. Find out more at www.artisttrust.org.”
- Provide Artist Trust materials at the event, which can be mailed to you or can be picked up at the office.
- If it’s possible, take 300 dpi photos at your event that we might use in our upcoming publications.
- Return form confirming you met all requirements of MTA along with a letter describing your Meet the Artist event and experience (by deadline above). Please include the date and location of the event, number of participants and any interesting anecdotes. A check for the remainder of your award ($500) will be issued within four weeks after your letter is received.
Planning and Setting Up a MTA Event
MTA events may include a public reading, lecture, workshop, or performance. Your event can be anything you want it to be as long as the environment is interactive – sharing your artistic process with your audience while also giving them the opportunity to ask questions and be involved. We also ask that you share information about Artist Trust and discuss the impact the Fellowship has had on your work. Artist Trust will provide you with materials to display. Examples of appropriate and inappropriate events are:
- A Seattle visual artist traveling to the Jefferson County Library to give a presentation on their work – is an appropriate MTA event.
- A Seattle visual artist presenting a slide lecture on their work at University of Washington’s art department – is not an appropriate MTA Event.
- A Spokane-based artist presenting their poetry to high school students – is appropriate.
- An Olympia music group giving a free presentation/lecture of their work in the venue where they perform – is not necessarily an appropriate event. If they invite members of the community who are not familiar with their work – such as students, community center members, or a visual art group, etc. – then this is an appropriate MTA event.
You are responsible for organizing and implementing your event with the guidance of the Artist Trust staff. It is also up to you to find a host for your event. Most schools, community centers, and libraries welcome artists who are willing to come and share their work. Remember, this event should be planned well in advance.
