What is it about animal protagonists that can shed light on our human struggles for understanding, meaning, love, and happiness? Garth Stein, author of the New York Times bestselling book The Art of Racing in the Rain, will discuss how animal characters speak to us and what we can learn from them. Cost: $15, $5 for members of Tacoma Art Museum. Pre-registration is recommended and space is limited.

Tacoma Art Museum / Zeit-Bike Art Installation on the Atrium

Come out for the fourth annual Zeit-Bike exhibition where three artists will display kinetic bike sculptures. On Free Third Thursday, May 20, there will be a special outdoor demonstration of the kinetic bike sculptures on the plaza along with a screening of Necessary Folly, a film made by Olympia-local Dr. Oliver Newsome about a human-powered sculpture race in northern California. Zeit-Bike is supported by the City of Tacoma, Pierce County, Pierce Transit, Tacoma Art Museum, and a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant.

There's an animal in us all . . . and for some there are animals on the outside, too — in the form of tattoos. Come learn about the art of tattooing animal imagery and the process an artist goes through with a client, from choosing an animal to finishing a tattoo. Admission is free on Third Thursdays every month.

  We are pleased to present Ann Breckon who will demonstrate in watercolors. Ann is an award winning artist and experienced teacher whose paintings have been displayed in the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, and in numerous local and national exhibitions. She is currently a signature member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, holds membership in the National Watercolor Society, the American Watercolor Society, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and the Eastside Association of Fine Arts.  She is also juried into the Women Painters of Washington where she served two years as president.

  Jay Steensma (1941-1994) is considered to be part of the second generation of the Morris Graves-founded “Northwest School," an art movement near Seattle that peaked in the 1930s and 1940s. Known primarily for his expressionistic, stark landscapes and sincere portraits, he incorporated mystical references of chalices, snakes, houses, clouds and fish in his mixed media work.

Clay? III investigates the increasingly important role of ceramics in contemporary art. Using recent technological advances and working with contemporary concepts, ceramic artists are building on clay's rich tradition to create new and innovative work. This biennial exhibition features 20 pieces selected by the UW ceramic professors from over 200 national and international submissions.

Juried by Jamie Walker, Akio Takamori, and Doug Jeck.

Opening will be Thursday, March 18 from 6-8:30 PM (Awards Ceremony at 7 PM).
