The Michaelis School of Fine Art is internationally recognized as one of Africa's foremost institutions for the study of fine art. Seeking applications for the following post for appointment as soon as possible.
The School seeks to appoint a new member of staff with an established international standing and specialization in Painting, who would be able to lead teaching and research in Studio Work practice, as well as contribute to teaching Discourse and the Theory & Practice of Art courses in the BAFA program.
The successful candidate will be responsible for both teaching undergraduate courses and supervising postgraduate research, and should be conversant with both traditional and contemporary painting media. Familiarity with development in digital technologies, for example Videography and postproduction software, or areas such as Curatorship, would be an advantage.
The School recognizes the interdisciplinary nature of much contemporary art and while expertise in painting is a prerequisite, the School would welcome applicants who understand these shifts and who would take the opportunity to develop and extend emerging trends and new innovations in contemporary fine art practice.
The successful applicant must have at least an MFA (or equivalent) with proven research capacity and an exhibition record attesting to their understanding of contemporary art discourse, while a PhD would strengthen candidature. The ability to supervise postgraduate research projects is essential and candidates appointed at the senior levels must be prepared to assume the role of Head of Department if nominated.
The Painting section of the School includes workshops and studios, as well as access to the School's digital labs. The successful applicant will be allocated studio space and be encouraged to apply for funding for her/her own creative work. A start-up grant enables new staff to launch their research programs.
