Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church of Seattle / Multimedia "Saints Gallery" / Call for Submissions

Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church of Seattle invites artists, filmmakers, writers and musicians to submit materials for a temporary, curated gallery running Oct. 31 – Nov. 12 commemorating All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Materials wanted: original 2-D and 3-D visual art, writing (prepared for visual presentation – short pieces or excerpts on broadsheets preferred), music and video. We are especially interested in partnering with local artists, but all artists over 18 are welcome to enter their work.

Potential Themes: Mortality & Immortality/ Saints: Known and Unknown/ Honoring Souls & the Faithful Departed: Loved Ones & Strangers/ Legacies & Life Stories/ Communion of Saints & Spiritual Community/ Martyrs & Heroes

Notes: All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days are uniquely human holy days. Submissions need not be overtly “religious” - we believe the life-changing reality of Jesus Christ encompasses the realities of human experience in all their gore and glory. Both reverence and irreverence have a place in any honest reflection on the human condition. Pieces will be selected based on their artistic quality and contribution to the theme. A $50 prize will be awarded to one selection in each of 3 categories:
1. visual art, 2. written word, 3. audio/visual (music, video, etc.). There are no entry fees or sales commissions. The gallery will assist those wishing to purchase a piece in contacting the artist directly.

Submission Checklist:
• Catalog Information – 1 sentence artist bio along with any contact information you want listed in the catalog. Also include title, medium, dimensions and price for each item, if items are for sale.
• Artist Statement – 1 paragraph limit for each work submitted (optional).
• Complete Contact Information – please include your full name, phone number, email address and snail mail address.

  • You may send up to 2 files (.jpg, .ppt, .doc, .pdf, .avi, .mpeg, .wmv, .wma or .mp3) to arts@capitolhillpres.org to let us preview your submission(s). Please note we will have limited capacity for video presentations: shorter loops will have the best chance for inclusion.
  • Submission deadline is Saturday, September 26, 2009.

The work will be juried on the basis of the files received. Acceptance notifications and delivery instructions for the original works will be sent out via e-mail by September 30. We will have drop-off and shipping (at artist’s expense) options, but please do not send us any original works until you have been notified that your piece has been accepted for the gallery. Accepted work should be display-ready (written word pieces formatted and submitted as hard copy, canvases ready to hang with wire attached, etc.) and must be RECEIVED by Thursday, October 23, 2009 (this is NOT a postmark deadline). Award money and artwork may be picked up at the gallery after the Art Walk at 8 pm, Thursday, November 12 or by appointment Monday through Friday 10 am – 3 pm the following week. IMPORTANT NOTE: No submissions will be returned by mail. Please do not submit original materials if you cannot pick them up at the church by Friday, November 20.

If you do not receive an email acknowledgement of your entry within a week of sending it, please feel free to follow up with us to confirm receipt. The gallery will publicize the event, and artists whose work has been included will receive postcard announcements to distribute as well. In addition to being displayed in the gallery, accepted works may be featured, with proper attribution, during a Sunday service, on the church’s website or in materials promoting the gallery.

The gallery will be open:

Saturday, October 31: 5-8 pm (Open House Preview during the Procession of the Spirits on Broadway)

Sunday, November 1: 5-8 pm (Artists’ Reception)

Friday, November 6: 5-8 pm

Sunday, November 8: 12-2 pm and

Thursday, November 12: 5-8 pm (Capitol Hill Art Walk)

as well as by appointment Mon.-Fri. 10 am-3 pm: call 206-285-2282 to schedule.

The gallery will accept donations at the door ($5 suggested). Half of all proceeds will go to the Rafiki Foundation, an organization providing home environments and education for children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic throughout sub-Saharan Africa. (It is traditional to give toys, clothing and food to orphans on All Souls' Day.) The remaining donations will be used to defray the costs of hosting the gallery and future community arts events.
