About EMP
Mission
Experience Music Project (EMP) provides dynamic, multifaceted, ever-changing experiences through new and exciting explorations of American popular music, which both entertain and engage visitors in the creative process.

Description
EMP is a one-of-a-kind music museum combining interactive and interpretive exhibits to tell the story of the creative, innovative and rebellious expression that defines American popular music. Featuring a world-class collection of artifacts, unique architecture by Frank O. Gehry, state-of-the-art technology, and exciting interactive presentations, EMP will encourage visitors of all ages and backgrounds to experience the power and joy of music in its many forms.

The Project
Visitors to EMP will take an unprecedented and technologically advanced journey that will inspire them to explore and celebrate music as never before. EMP is dedicated to capturing and reflecting the essence of rock ‘n’ roll, from its roots in jazz, soul, gospel, country and the blues, to its influence on hip hop, punk and other more recent genres. EMP invites visitors to participate in a total sensory experience: see rare artifacts and memorabilia, hear musicians tell their stories, or play an instrument and create your own music. Learning about music has never been so much fun.

The Inspiration
EMP was conceived by Paul G. Allen and Jody Patton. Paul Allen’s early passion for Jimi Hendrix led to his amassing of the world’s largest collection of Hendrix memorabilia, and later, his desire to share that collection with the public. Early planning soon gave way to a broader cultural mission for both Paul and Jody — to create a destination for celebrating musical innovation and for inspiring young and old to feel moved by music - and so Experience Music Project was born.

EMP’s collection includes more than 80,000 artifacts that helped shape music history, including musical instruments (from one of the first electric guitars to those used by artists such as Bob Dylan, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters and Kurt Cobain), an extensive recorded sound archive, film, photographs, fanzines from around the world, stage costumes, handwritten song lyrics and rare song sheets.

About SFM

Description

The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (SFM) is a 501©(3) nonprofit organization created to inspire new generations to reach beyond the present, imagine the future and explore the infinite possibilities of the universe.

The first museum devoted to this dynamic and far-reaching genre, SFM combines artifacts and information in evocative environments, immersing visitors in science fiction’s “alternative worlds.” Witness how science fiction touches all forms of artistic expression and reframes the complexities of science, art, culture and the humanities - helping give visitors new insights into themselves and their world.

The museum is also home to the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, honoring the legends and luminaries that have shaped humanity’s visions of the future. The initial 36 members of the Hall of Fame represent major figures in the establishment of the science fiction genre - from Mary Shelley and H.G. Wells to Sir Arthur C. Clarke and Robert Heinlein. New members will be inducted annually as SFM continues to celebrate the artists and thinkers that create the visions of tomorrow.

The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of fame is co-located with Experience Music Project in the landmark Frank Gehry building at Seattle Center.

The Inspiration

As one of the most popular and compelling genres of our time, science fiction, from literature to movies and beyond, is loved by millions, and plays a key role in engaging young and old alike in the sciences – from astronomy to zoology. Museum founder Paul G. Allen’s early admiration of science fiction and its role in inspiring critical thinking about society, history, culture and politics led to the creation of the first museum of its kind. Fellow founder Jody Patton has been instrumental in crafting the vision and development of the museum. Additionally, SFM’s Advisory Board, comprised of renowned science fiction creators including, among many others, Greg Bear, Ray Bradbury, Octavia Butler, James Cameron, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg, has played a key role in the creation of SFM and will continue to guide it into the future.
