FUNERIA

FUNERIA LLC is a unique arts agency and exhibitions organizer that promotes and sells original contemporary artist-made urns, vessels, reliquaries and personal memorial artworks through retail and wholesale channels worldwide.

FUNERIA has been identified as leading the emerging funerary arts movement since April 2001 when it issued a Call for Entries for the first international juried competition and exhibition of new funerary urns and vessels. Ashes to Art® opened at San Francisco’s historic Fort Mason Center on November 29. Since then, FUNERIA has featured original, superbly crafted funerary vessels and memorial objects at Onishi Gallery in New York City (Ashes to Art | Modern Kuyo, 2007), the ICE BOX at Crane Arts in Philadelphia (Ashes to Art 2006), Le Bourget in Paris (Salon Funeraire 2003), and in Vancouver BC, Las Vegas, Chicago and elsewhere.

Its 4th international biennial competition and exhibition, Ashes to Art | scattered, opens September 26–November 30, 2008 an hour north of San Francisco at Art Honors Life | The Gallery at FUNERIA in Sonoma County. Following an August 1 deadline, entries are selected based on points awarded by jurors in reviewing slides and digital images. Jurors in 2008 are Adela Akers, Nadine Jarvis and Sylvia Seventy. Past jurors have included artists and sculptors, arts professionals, arts educators and scholars, designers, architects and curators, among whom have been Michael Monroe, Nicholas Kripal, Gino de Valerio, Candace Barnes, Eric Spillman, Carol Green and Christiane M. Vincent.

Cash, other awards and additional exposure for beautifully crafted original work appeal to artists and design teams that are interested in redefining the aesthetics and purpose of cremation urns and memorial objects. It is a genre that has emerged in response to the significantly higher numbers of art- and design-conscious individuals and families that are choosing cremation over traditional burial for themselves as well as their pets and animals.

In January 2007, the opening of Art Honors Life | The Gallery at FUNERIA was heralded as “the nation’s first art gallery dedicated to cremation urns and personal memorial art” (In Life as in Death, a Personalized Space, Patricia Leigh Brown, The New York Times, 1/18/07).
