Seattle Art Museum / 2008 Betty Bowen Award / Call for Entries

The Betty Bowen Award is open to all visual artists working in Washington, Oregon, or Idaho. This year one artist will be awarded a significant cash prize and an opportunity to display their work at the Seattle Art Museum. Often, PONCHO Special Recognition Awards are also granted at the discretion of the committee. The application will close at 11:00 PM Pacific Standard Time on August 15, 2008.

Betty Bowen (1918–1977) was a Washington native and enthusiastic supporter of Northwest artists whose friends established the annual Betty Bowen Award as a celebration of her life and to honor and continue her efforts to provide financial support to the artists of the region. Since 1977, the Seattle Art Museum has hosted the yearly grant application process by which the selection committee chooses one artist from the Northwest to receive an unrestricted cash award, eligible to visual artists working in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

Who is eligible for the award?

If you are a visual artist working in Washington, Oregon, or Idaho, we encourage you to apply. Sorry, no performing arts.

Why should you apply for the Betty Bowen Award?

This is an opportunity for artists to introduce their work to SAM’s Curators of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Betty Bowen committee members. In addition, each year two artists are selected as rotating members of the committee. This is a chance for your work to be critiqued by your peers. This year Margie Livingston, the 2006 Betty Bowen Award winner, and Dan Webb, the 2003 Betty Bowen Award Recipient, will be instrumental in the selection process.

Please upload a resume, artist statement, and six images with your on-line application. When uploading your images you will be asked to include the title, date, medium, and dimensions of each work.

All entries should be submitted on-line. Entries sent by standard mail will not be accepted. However, if you are an artist working in film or video, you are required to upload six film stills with your application and send a DVD or VHS of the complete work to:

Deadline: All applications must be completed and submitted on-line by 11:00 PM Pacific Standard Time on August 15, 2008.

How are the awards chosen?

The jury is in two parts. In part one, approximately five finalists are selected from among approximately 500 entries. Finalists are contacted and their names are released to the press. Finalists are asked to submit additional materials and are invited to present their work to the committee individually. After this review process, the committee selects one award winner plus any PONCHO Special Recognition Award winners they wish to honor. Selection is based on, but not limited to, the following perceptions:

♦ The quality of the work submitted for review

♦ The creativity and skill of the artist

♦ The artist’s commitment to developing their work

♦ The impact the award will have on the artist

♦ How developed the artist is in their career
