Personal Statement

The Portal Series began an exploration into the space between the physical and non-physical world. While walking through a 1940’s abandoned military fort and hearing the sound of children’s laughter echoing in the rooms between rusted doors I considered how brief our physical time is here. I saw the doors as a passage to another period of time or thought. I walked through rooms that were filled with people who were long since gone. It was as if I could still hear their voices.

My paintings chronicle the multiple events of everyday life, punctuated by moments of indecision, clarity, and joy that are part of human nature. How decisions are made, in each moment of time, intrigued me. My images evolve from these passages of life.

I paint to the raw edge of the canvas. By applying paint, and then taking it off, the transparency and light of the background shows through. Adding collage elements reflects the complexity of our life. Geometric forms hint at architecture and civilization in an abstract space that appears completely organic. It adds a three dimensional quality that reflects a physical existence.

The space between the physical and nonphysical is where my creativity comes from.  These paintings help me experience these moments again despite the passage of time.

Biography

Kathy has been passionate about art since she was in elementary school. The human form and drawing has always intrigued her.  She went to art school in 1987 while working as an RN and raising children. Much of her work has been realistic and she has illustrated a number of children’s books including one written by Cooper Edens.

She began to explore abstract art to loosen up her scientific attention to detail. The joy of moving paint around on canvas and playing with line reminded her of the freedom of childhood and doing finger painting, exploring color and going outside the lines. Making her own colors and deciding what to color to use while using her imagination was the most fun she ever had. She wanted to continue the experience.
