EDGE at Centrum

Cycle B at Centrum (August 23 - 30, 2008):

In August 2008, Artist Trust will offer EDGE as a week-long training program at Centrum. Located in Port Townsend in the historic Fort Worden State Park, Centrum is a statewide center for arts and creative education. During the two pilot years of Artist Trust's EDGE Program, all EDGE sessions took place in Seattle. Several artists from outside the greater Seattle area took part in the program, including artists from Ellensburg, Twisp, Tacoma, Hoquiam, and Roslyn. Each made their way to Seattle every weekend for 6 weeks. Many said that the experience of participating in the training program in Seattle introduced them to insights of and relationships with members of a larger arts community. Artist Trust recognizes the significant commitment these artists made to participate in EDGE and hope that a week-long program at Centrum will provide a better format for artists throughout Washington State to participate in the EDGE Program.

CENTRUM
Centrum was founded in 1973 by the Washington State Arts Commission, the State Parks and Recreation Commission and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, for people of all ages and abilities to participate in workshops, classes, events and performances. Perched at the northeast tip of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, Centrum is a magical combination of land and sea, with panoramic views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, as well as the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges.

Located a short ferry ride from Seattle, Centrum is easily accessible, while feeling worlds away, set in the timeless beauty of Fort Worden State Park offering a peaceful use for a turn-of-the-century military fort. The 445-acre park features salt-water beaches, wooded hills with trails and abandoned gun emplacements, a traditional military parade ground and the ‘Chinese Gardens’ lagoon area.

FOOD AND LODGING at Centrum
If you are selected to participate in Cycle B at Centrum, you will be provided with lodging on the Centrum grounds and three meals per day. Linens and bedding are provided. Each artist will be provided with their own bedroom. Most lodging units have 3 bedrooms, one bathroom, and one kitchen. Food and lodging costs Artist Trust $350 per participant. Artist Trust requires that participants pay $150 to help cover the cost. This fee is in addition to any EDGE tuition the participant is expected to cover.

SCHEDULE at Centrum
The week-long training program WILL BE INTENSIVE. Artists selected to participate will be expected to arrive at Centrum having completed some preliminary assignments, which might include the creation of an initial portfolio, a draft for writing a grant or developing a business plan, or having researched online opportunities ahead of time. Participating artists will also be asked to participate fully in eight days of instruction. This immersive experience will bring artists detailed and intimate knowledge of professional practices while also creating a community of artist-to-artist support.

Cycle B participants will be expected to arrive at Centrum by noon on Saturday, August 23. Sunday, August 24 through Friday, August 29, sessions will be held 9 am to 6 pm. Homework will be assigned some evenings. The final session will be held on Saturday, August 30, from 9 am to noon.

If you are selected to participate in Cycle B at Centrum and require tuition assistance, you may apply for assistance to cover some or all of the tuition cost. However, ALL CENTRUM PARTICIPANTS, whether they receive tuition assistance or not, are required to pay $150, to partially cover food and lodging costs.
